Apricot flowers bloom on apricot trees, and this distinct tree species is closely related to plums and peaches. Sometimes, they are also called Japanese apricot, Japanese plum or Chinese plum flowers. Today, they are widely cultivated in gardens throughout East Asia.

The apricot tree is a small deciduous tree that grows to about 7 m in height. It has a rounded crown and spreading branches. The leaves are green, oval-shaped with a pointed tip and measure 4-8 cm long. The flowers are borne in early spring before the leaves emerge. The leaves appear only after the petals fall off. The fruit ripens in late summer and is oval-shaped with a smooth, yellow or orange skin.

Prunus mume originally grew in the Yangtze River Valley in the southern part of China. It was later introduced to Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Taiwan. It can be found in lightly wooded areas, forests with shaded slopes along pathways, stream banks and mountains at altitudes up to 2000-3000 meters.
